South African Post halts US deliveries

On August 29–30, 2025, SAPO announced an immediate halt to all outbound parcel deliveries containing goods to the United States. This suspension was prompted by a U.S. executive order issued by President Trump, which removed the long-standing $800 “de minimis” duty‑free threshold for international parcels. Under the new policy, foreign postal services must now collect and remit U.S. customs duties prior to shipping, a requirement SAPO says it cannot comply with immediately due to complex procedural challenges.

SAPO clarified that the suspension only affects parcels containing goods. Letters, documents, and exempt mail categories—such as military mail—remain unaffected and continue to be processed as usual. Parcels already held at the Germiston International Mail Centre that cannot meet the new customs requirements are being returned to senders.

This move is not unique to South Africa—other countries including France, Germany, the UK, Japan, and Australia have also temporarily suspended parcel services to the U.S. while they adjust their systems to comply with the new regulations.

SAPO is already under strain, operating under a business rescue process owing to years of financial challenges, mismanagement, and declining service levels. This new disruption adds further complexity to its efforts to recover and modernise operations.
