The incident took place near the Gelan Bridge in Bona Zuria Woreda, approximately 300 kilometers south of Addis Ababa. The truck, reportedly overloaded with passengers, veered off a winding road and missed the bridge, leading to the catastrophic fall into the river below.
Among the deceased were 68 men and three women, many of whom were returning from a wedding ceremony. The overcrowded vehicle struggled to navigate the bendy road before the accident. Bystanders attempted to rescue the trapped passengers by entering the river and using ropes to retrieve the wreckage, but their efforts were largely in vain.
Local authorities, including Wosenyeleh Simion, spokesperson for the Sidama regional government, indicated that the vehicle might have been overloaded, contributing to the accident.
