Ethiopia truck crash kills at least 70 wedding party guests

On December 29, 2024, a tragic accident occurred in Ethiopia’s Sidama Region when a truck carrying wedding guests plunged into a river, resulting in at least 71 fatalities.

The incident took place near the Gelan Bridge in Bona Zuria Woreda, approximately 300 kilometers south of Addis Ababa. The truck, reportedly overloaded with passengers, veered off a winding road and missed the bridge, leading to the catastrophic fall into the river below.

Among the deceased were 68 men and three women, many of whom were returning from a wedding ceremony. The overcrowded vehicle struggled to navigate the bendy road before the accident. Bystanders attempted to rescue the trapped passengers by entering the river and using ropes to retrieve the wreckage, but their efforts were largely in vain.

Local authorities, including Wosenyeleh Simion, spokesperson for the Sidama regional government, indicated that the vehicle might have been overloaded, contributing to the accident. Images from the scene depict the overturned truck surrounded by bystanders, highlighting the community’s immediate response to the tragedy.

Traffic accidents are a significant concern in Ethiopia, often attributed to poor driving conditions and inadequately maintained vehicles. This incident underscores the pressing need for improved road safety measures and stricter enforcement of vehicle regulations to prevent such devastating occurrences in the future.

The Ethiopian government has expressed condolences to the families affected by this tragedy and has pledged to investigate the cause of the accident thoroughly. As the nation mourns the loss of so many lives, this incident serves as a somber reminder of the critical importance of road safety and the need for ongoing efforts to enhance transportation infrastructure and regulations in Ethiopia.
