Libyan security commander survives assassination attempt

In a stark reminder of Libya’s fragile security landscape, a high-ranking security commander narrowly escaped an assassination attempt this week, highlighting the ongoing volatility and political fragmentation plaguing the North African nation. The targeted official, whose identity has been confirmed as Colonel Mahmoud Al-Zein, serves as a senior commander in the internal security apparatus based in Tripoli. The attack occurred late Tuesday evening, as Al-Zein’s convoy was ambushed by unidentified gunmen in the capital’s southern suburbs.

According to initial reports, heavily armed assailants opened fire on the convoy from two vehicles, triggering a fierce exchange of gunfire. Al-Zein escaped unharmed, though two of his security escorts were injured and are currently receiving treatment in a Tripoli hospital. Security forces quickly cordoned off the area and launched an investigation, but no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attempted assassination.

The incident underscores the persistent dangers faced by political and military figures in Libya, where rival factions continue to vie for power in the absence of a unified national government. Despite a 2020 ceasefire agreement and multiple rounds of UN-brokered peace talks, Libya remains deeply divided between eastern and western authorities, each backed by competing militias and foreign interests.

Analysts suggest that the attempt on Al-Zein’s life may be linked to recent crackdowns on smuggling networks and organized crime groups operating in western Libya. As a security official known for his hardline stance on corruption and trafficking, Al-Zein has made powerful enemies within both criminal circles and rival militia groups. His survival is being interpreted by some as a symbol of resistance to the destabilizing influence of these networks.

In a brief statement issued following the attack, Libya’s Presidential Council condemned the assassination attempt and reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing national security. “Such acts of violence will not deter our efforts to stabilize the country and bring perpetrators to justice,” the statement read.

The international community, including the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), also expressed concern over the growing insecurity in Tripoli and urged all factions to refrain from acts that could derail the fragile peace process.

As investigations continue, the assassination attempt on Colonel Al-Zein serves as a grim reminder that while frontline battles may have subsided, the threat of political violence and lawlessness remains a potent force in post-revolution Libya.
