Rebels seize second major city in DR Congo

In February 2025, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) experienced a significant escalation in conflict as the M23 rebel group, reportedly backed by Rwanda, seized control of two major cities in the eastern region: Goma and Bukavu. These developments have intensified concerns about regional stability and the humanitarian situation.

Capture of Goma

Goma, the capital of North Kivu province, fell to M23 rebels in late January 2025. The city’s strategic location near the Rwandan border and its proximity to Lake Kivu make it a vital hub for trade and transportation. The fall of Goma marked a significant blow to the DRC government, highlighting the rebels’ growing influence in the region.

Advance to Bukavu

Following the capture of Goma, M23 forces advanced southward, targeting Bukavu, the capital of South Kivu province. By mid-February 2025, reports confirmed that Bukavu had been occupied by M23 rebels. The city’s strategic importance, coupled with its role as a commercial center, underscores the gravity of this development. The M23’s entry into Bukavu was marked by minimal resistance from Congolese forces, who reportedly retreated alongside civilians.

Humanitarian Impact

The occupation of these cities has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC. In Bukavu, widespread looting ensued, with mobs ransacking businesses and government offices. The World Food Programme’s depot in the city, containing 6,800 metric tons of food supplies, was looted, further endangering the well-being of displaced populations.

Regional Implications

The M23’s rapid territorial gains have raised concerns about the potential for regional destabilization. The group’s expansion into South Kivu, following their earlier capture of Goma, suggests a strategic push to control key areas rich in mineral resources. This development has prompted international calls for dialogue and a ceasefire to prevent further escalation.

International Response

The international community has expressed grave concern over the situation. The United Nations and several Western nations have accused Rwanda of providing support to the M23 rebels, a claim that Rwanda denies. The DRC government has called for the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from its territory, while international leaders urge for a ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks.

Conclusion

The seizure of Goma and Bukavu by M23 rebels represents a significant escalation in the conflict in eastern DRC. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing humanitarian challenges and regional implications. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, advocating for dialogue and a peaceful resolution to the crisis.
