Fifty dead in gold mine collapse in Mali

In February 2025, a devastating gold mine collapse in Mali resulted in the deaths of at least 42 individuals, with many others injured. The incident occurred at a mining site in Bilali Koto, Dabia, in the eastern part of the country. This tragedy marks the second major mining accident in Mali within a month, underscoring the persistent dangers associated with artisanal mining in the region.

The collapse took place on a Saturday, with reports indicating that a landslide at the site led to the fatalities. The mine was reportedly managed by Chinese nationals, and authorities are investigating the legality of its operations. The local community leader, Falaye Sissoko, confirmed the incident, and Mohamed Dicko, the prefect of Kéniéba, stated that the death toll of 42 should be definitive.

Mali is one of Africa’s top gold producers, with gold accounting for more than 80% of the country’s total exports. The mining sector supports over 2 million people, or more than 10% of Mali’s population. Artisanal gold mining is estimated to produce around 30 tons of gold annually, representing 6% of Mali’s annual gold production.
