Putin and South African leader discuss trade and Ukraine conflict

On April 21, 2025, Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in a phone conversation with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to discuss the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, Putin emphasized the importance of addressing the “root causes” of the conflict and safeguarding Russia’s security interests.

This discussion reflects ongoing diplomatic engagements amid the protracted crisis involving Russia and Ukraine. South Africa has consistently advocated for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, proposing initiatives aimed at fostering dialogue between the parties involved. President Ramaphosa has previously briefed President Putin on South Africa’s efforts to facilitate a settlement, highlighting the country’s commitment to supporting African-led peace initiatives.

In addition to the Ukraine conflict, the two leaders also discussed enhancing trade and economic cooperation between their nations. Putin noted that there are “promising areas of cooperation” to further strengthen their trade relations, particularly in sectors such as energy, industry, agriculture, science, and innovation. This aligns with South Africa’s broader strategy to diversify its economic partnerships and reduce dependency on traditional Western markets.

The bilateral relationship between Russia and South Africa is underpinned by historical ties dating back to the apartheid era, during which the Soviet Union supported South Africa’s anti-apartheid movement. These enduring connections have fostered a sense of solidarity and mutual respect between the two nations. Moreover, both countries are members of the BRICS group, which serves as a platform for promoting a multipolar world order and enhancing cooperation among emerging economies.

As global geopolitical dynamics continue to evolve, the partnership between Russia and South Africa remains significant. Their discussions on the Ukraine conflict and economic cooperation underscore a shared commitment to addressing global challenges through dialogue and collaboration. Looking ahead, it is anticipated that both leaders will continue to engage in constructive dialogue to further strengthen their bilateral ties and contribute to regional and global stability.
