In early 2025, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa received unexpected support from political rivals ahead of tense talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. This backing emerged amidst escalating diplomatic tensions following Trump’s executive order halting U.S. aid to South Africa, which he justified by citing the country’s controversial land expropriation law and its support for a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
The Democratic Alliance (DA), South Africa’s main opposition party, publicly criticized Trump’s actions, emphasizing that the land law was aimed at addressing historical injustices and did not constitute expropriation without compensation. DA leader John Steenhuisen, who serves as Minister of Agriculture in the governing coalition, clarified that the law was intended to benefit the public interest and not to seize land arbitrarily.
This stance marked a significant shift in the DA’s approach, as it chose to support the government’s position rather than align with Trump’s narrative. The party’s support was crucial in presenting a united front against external pressures and in reaffirming South Africa’s sovereignty in policymaking.
President Ramaphosa welcomed this support, stating that it reflected a commitment to national unity and the country’s democratic values. He emphasized that South Africa would not be intimidated by foreign interference and would continue to pursue policies that aimed to rectify historical wrongs and promote social justice.
The European Union also expressed solidarity with South Africa, reaffirming its support for the country’s leadership within the Group of 20 and its efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation. This international backing underscored the global recognition of South Africa’s right to determine its domestic policies without undue external influence.
In the face of these challenges, President Ramaphosa remains resolute in his commitment to land reform and international justice, navigating the complex diplomatic landscape with a focus on national interests and global partnerships.
